Club Rugby Season Kicks Off

The 2012 club rugby season kicks off this week end when Bluff SuperSpar Harlequins host the eighth anniversary of the Ronnie van Rooyen Club Rugby tournament out on the Bluff. Oom Ronnie, who passed away in December 2003, was one of club rugby’s most passionate administrators and by many of his club members considered the mightiest Quinn of them all.

The tournament is a celebration of his life and times in the game - a great icon of the Harlequins Rugby Football Club.

For Telnet Crusaders, their new sponsorship deal with the independent supplier of telecommunications solutions to Corporate Business in South Africa and KwaZulu Natal, Telnet, couldn’t have come at a better time (Read more here).

Certainly the club was floundering somewhat, but now with their new sponsors in harness it is all beginning to look a little rosier for them. They meet FNB Maritzburg Varsity on Saturday at 4.10 PM in the opening Fidelity Security Premier Division pre-season friendly of the day.

2011 Moor Cup champions Jonsson College Rovers will face last year’s runners up Acer Durban Collegians in the second Premier Division game of the day on the ‘A’ Field at 5.20pm with hosts Harlequins up against Pukke in the main game at 6.30pm.

The tournament starts on Friday evening with the under 20’s at 6pm with Collegians up against Rovers, Quins against Pukke under 19 while the Quins Under 20 line up face Varsity College Old Boys and the newly revamped Crusaders side meet Jaguars. Also appearing at the tournament will be sides from Yellowood Park, Hillcrest and South Coast.
