Club Rugby and Schoolboy Rugby Scrum Down

Varsity College Old Boys will be going back to their roots on Saturday 26 May, playing the curtain-raiser to the big local derby match between founder schools Glenwood High School and Durban High School. The game provides a great platform to showcase club rugby as both Varsity College Old Boys and Harlequins 1st XV are currently in the top four in the KZNRU Premier Division log standings.

"We are proud to be the first club to play an official premier division match at a school and it is an extra special day as the game is being played on the Glenwood High School's Old Boys Day," said Varsity College Old Boys Chairman Graham Thompson. "We are working hard to build relationships with our founder schools that will also assist the club to develop our junior club teams as well as provide a good feeder system into our senior teams."

The merger with Varsity College has benefits for both the club and the schools as Varsity College will be awarding both schools with a full tuition bursary to award to a rugby player of their choice. "Core to the educational philosophy that Varsity College subscribes to is the holistic development of the student, where we encourage and facilitate a balance between academics and participating in a sporting, social or cultural activity" says Carole Adam, Varsity College National Sports Manager.

"Our sports vision has been to identify key team sports and to create centres of excellence for these team sports at designated campuses. With specific reference to rugby the merger with Old Boys Rugby Club now known as Varsity College Old Boys rugby has cemented Durban North campus as the 'Home of Varsity College Rugby."

Varsity College is knocking on the door of country's top university rugby competitions so there are many opportunities at the club for aspiring young players to take their rugby career to the next level.

All the action will take place at Glenwood High School with the club match kicking off at 1.45pm and the schoolboy 1st XV match, an FNB Classic Clash game to be televised live on SuperSport, will start at 3.30pm.
