Impi go down fighting

Two magnificent tries by UKZN Impi Zimbabwean flyer Shayne Mokombe couldn't help the KZN students from suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of 2013 Varsity Shield champions and hosts CUT from Bloemfontein in the opening round match of the 2014 competition. The plucky KZN side went down 26-25 to the holders of the Shield.

Mokombe's first try in the first half was an absolute superb peace of individual brilliance from the talented winger after scrumhalf Cameron Wright had flighted a magnificent weighted kick for the flying wing to collect and race in for a memorable try under the poles. the feisty wing scored another in the dying minutes of the game for flyhalf Brandon Cope who hadn't missed a kick all afternoon see what should have been his match winning strike go wide for the hosts to take the honors.

Impi's other try came from prop Stefan van Schalkwyk while CUT's winning points came from a try by flyhalf Noel Marx, prop Danie van de Merwe and arguably the try of the match by center Johan van Schalkwyk with Marx kicking the rest.
