Community Cup Rovers To Start The Inaugural Competition Against Despatch

2012 National Open Club champions Jonsson College Rovers have the privilege of hosting the inaugural newly formed Cell C Community Cup Open Club Championship game on Reebok Park(KP 3) when they meet their visitors from Uitenhague at 3pm on Saturday.

The Community Cup was borne out of the need to revive and modernise club rugby in South Africa and after a three year research program it was decided to create a competition for open clubs to run concurrently with the Varsity Cup competition. At the end of each competition the winners of the Varsity Cup will play the winners of the Community Cup competition to decide the overall winner and which club is truly the top club in the country.

Rovers will be hosting representatives from SARU with the gates opening at 12 noon. There will be pre-match hospitality with appearances by current Sharks players while there will also be a surprise visit from Springbok mascot Bokkie and local rugby fans its hoped will be there to support the Natal and South African champion open club.

Meanwhile the UKZN Impis have had mixed fortunes in the start to their 2013 Varsity Shield campaign having won their two opening games beating Fort Hare 19-7 and TUT Pretoria 34-31 but lost 26-12 against CUT Bloemfontein while going down badly 38-15 to the University of the Western Cape.
