Varsity Shield and Community Cup

FNB UKZN Impi will hold on to their second spot on the Varsity Shield log table despite going down by the narrowest of margins 33-32 to the Belville students from the University of the Western Cape after leading comfortably 24-8 with 30 minutes left on the clock on the Howard College Durban Campus on Monday evening.

Varsity old boy and former Sharks center Errol Stewart who had presented the jerseys earlier to the team was on hand to watch his alma mater slide in the last quarter after it looked like a certain victory for the KZN students. Needless to say, they will be kicking themselves for allowing Pieter de Villiers' charges to come back the way they did, but but you have to say full marks for the tireless tenacity of the visitors.

A late try by Impi prop Bartholomeus Le Roux converted by scrumhalf Cameron Wright gave the side that much-needed extra bonus point to keep them on track for top honors but now they are really going to have to dig deep. Their other tries came from Deon Carney, Shayne Makombe and Duncan Campbell who also slotted three conversions.

Jonsson College Rovers kick off their Cell C Community Cup campaign on Saturday at 1pm against the visiting Griffons side Welkom Rugby Club. Coach Greg Miller has announced the starting line up for what looks destined to be a tough competition this year. Rovers, last year's runners-up to the side from Uitenhague, Despatch, will be eager to be making amends in this year's national open club competition this time around.

The Rovers side is: Jors Dannhauser, Dusty Noble, Quinton Crocker, Jongi Nokwe, Chris Micklewood (captain), Shannon Rick, Calvin Adam, Liam O'Connell, Jean Pretorius, Nicolai Blignaut, Simba Bwanya, Jabulani Mkize, Warwick Venter, and Matt Jones.
